Breaking New Ground: Newman Catholic Schools Launches Phase II of Athletics & Faith Complex
Leaders participate in the ceremonial groundbreaking for Phase II of the Academic, Athletics & Faith Complex.

A vision years in the making took its next big step forward on April 30, 2025, as Newman Catholic Schools officially broke ground on Phase II of the Academic, Athletics & Faith Complex.

With shovels in hand and hearts full of gratitude, students, staff, community leaders, and project partners gathered on the grounds of Balliet Field to celebrate the next chapter of growth for the Newman community. The event blended ceremony and celebration with a clear sense of purpose: to support students in mind, body, and spirit.

An Afternoon of Mission and Momentum
The ceremony opened with a warm welcome from Chad Holmes, who later offered closing reflections. Rev. Eric Mashak, Newman Catholic Schools Chaplain, led the community in prayer and blessing, grounding the event in faith.

Jeff Gulan, President of Newman Catholic Schools, shared insight into the scope of the project and offered words of thanks to those making this next phase possible. Representing the Academic, Athletics & Faith Complex Committee, Ron Klimisch spoke on the vision behind the initiative, while Mona Fox, President of the NC Athletics Booster Club, emphasized the lasting impact the facility will have on students and families.

Two student-athletes, Brecklyn Lindner and Griffin Puent, both Class of 2026, offered reflections on their experiences as Newman athletes and expressed excitement about what this expansion will mean for future Cardinals.

Project contractor Tanner Boson, Vice President of The Boson Company, acknowledged the work of key construction partners, including:

  • The Boson Company

  • PGA, Inc.

  • K & M Electric, Inc.

A Vision Built on Community and Care
Phase II of the complex includes a series of transformative upgrades focused on Balliet Field and the surrounding facilities:

  • Installation of a turf football/soccer field

  • WIAA-compliant updates to track and field facilities

  • Adequate home and away seating

  • Lighting for evening events

  • Updated scoreboards suited for all sports

With an estimated cost of $4 million, this phase represents more than a facilities upgrade—it’s an investment in student experience, school pride, and the formation of well-rounded young people rooted in Catholic values.

A Cardinal Future Ahead
As the Newman community looks forward to the project's completion, the energy and support behind this effort reflect the strength of a school rooted in faith and fueled by hope.
