Faith in Education
Since its inception in 1987, Newman Catholic Middle School has incorporated each of the characteristics of a truly effective middle school recommended by the middle level experts and the Carnegie Task Force on Education of Young Adolescents.
The wonderful example Christ showed through His life is an important foundation for spiritual development at Newman Catholic Middle School. Christian values which emphasize love of God, respect for others, and respect for self are basic themes incorporated into daily activities.
Newman Catholic Middle School is organized into grade-level interdisciplinary teams, in which the academic subject areas of religion, math, science, English, reading, and social studies are taught by a team of three to four teachers. In addition, specialists teach Algebra, foreign language, computer literacy, vocal and instrumental music, art, and physical education. Students may get a head start on high school by taking world language over a two year span and by taking Algebra I if they qualify.
A strong guidance program, facilitated by a guidance counselor, helps with student development in the areas of peer and adult relationships, decision-making, self-esteem, academic success, peer pressures, high school planning, and many other affective areas crucial to the middle level student. In addition, a school-wide advisory program supports guidance themes and promotes positive interactions and problem solving among students across all classrooms and grade levels.
Newman Catholic Middle School has many additional programs to offer. A successful Learning Resource Program, which offers intensive individual assistance to students who need special help in a particular subject area. The band and choir students perform at the Christmas and Spring Concerts, and the eighth graders participate in Solo and Ensemble and in Large Group critiques. A fully-staffed and stocked library with internet connections to other libraries is available. Student clubs and leadership programs offer opportunities for community service and involvement. A strong athletic program is also available to the students.
The solid academic foundation Newman Catholic Middle School offers prepares students for high school and beyond. The majority of our graduates continue their educational success at Newman Catholic High School and to the college of their choice. Last year over $30,000 in scholarships was awarded to those planning to attend Newman Catholic High School.
