Newman Catholic Schools Restructuring
(Middle School moves to High School Campus, Early Childhood Center to Open)

PRESS RELEASE

Wausau, WI (January 8, 2010) – Newman Catholic Schools is making some changes, highlighted by the relocation and/or consolidation of middle school, child care and elementary school programs. The reason behind these changes is an effort to more effectively steward the resources available to Newman Catholic Schools while providing a quality Catholic education.
The following changes go into effect with the 2010-2011 school year:
• Middle School: The middle school program (grades 6, 7 and 8) will move in its entirety to the Newman Catholic High School campus. Future building use remains the decision of St. Matthew Parish and the Diocese of La Crosse.
• Grades K-5: The grade K through grade 5 program will be offered at the St. Mark Parish and St. Anne Parish locations. The current K-5 program at St. Michael Parish will be discontinued, replaced by a new, comprehensive Early Childhood Center.
• Early Childhood Center: This new center at St. Michael will offer licensed child care and preschool program options including 2-day, 3-day and 4-year-old Prekindergarten.
Other changes are related to the establishment of the Early Childhood Center at St. Michael Parish:
• Programs moving to the Early Childhood Center:
o Licensed child care currently located at Holy Name of Jesus
o All preschool and 4-year-old Prekindergarten currently located at St. Anne
• Continuing programs:
o Licensed child care at St. Therese for children ages six weeks through age 12
o K – 5 elementary at St. Anne (with non-licensed before and after school child care for its students)
o Preschool-Grade 5 elementary at St. Mark (with non-licensed before and after school child care and wrap-around preschool level child care)
Parents, students and staff will have the opportunity to become familiar with how these changes will be implemented at upcoming open houses and visitation sessions. There will be a decrease in the number of teaching and support staff positions, but the exact number will not be known until some time after enrollments for the coming year are complete and further analysis can be made.
While economic pressures and shifting enrollment levels have led to this particular restructuring plan, these changes also reflect a growing level of multi-parish cooperation within the Newman Catholic Schools system. The decision to approve the pastors’ recommendations by Bishop Listecki was made after a local process that included consultation, parish listening sessions, research and stakeholder surveys. Bishop Listecki’s approval clears the way to proceed with restructuring.
