From preschool through 12th grade, each student is called to participate, celebrate, and grow in his or her faith community. Campus ministry at Newman Catholic Schools facilitates the spiritual life of students through worship, prayer, and service to deepen their relationship with God, one another, our supporting Parishes and the local community.
Worship
Eucharistic celebration is essential to spiritual growth; therefore, students celebrate Liturgy throughout the school year as a full student body or as an individual class. High school students attend Mass two times per month and weekly during the Lent and Advent Seasons, while middle school and elementary students attend weekly liturgy throughout the school year. All liturgies have a central focus based upon the Scriptures. All Newman Catholic School students and teachers gather as a full faith community annually for a system-wide liturgy in celebration of Catholic Schools Week. Families are always welcome to worship with us and numerous parents often partake in our worship opportunities.
Students of all ages are greatly involved in worship services serving as Cantors, Eucharistic Ministers, Servers, Lectors, Sacristans, Gift Bearers and Musicians. A Campus Ministry Club in the middle school and Christian Ministry course in the high school provide additional opportunities to assist with worship and serve each school’s spiritual community.
Christ the Teacher Chapel, located in the front entrance of Newman Catholic High School, also offers a beautiful place of worship for classes, individual reflection, and prayer services. The Chapel’s location and design provide a witness to the central focus of faith in our school.
Additionally, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered at every school during the Advent and Lent Seasons. Priests from throughout the Wausau area assist with Reconciliation services.
Prayer
Prayer is an integral part of the Newman Catholic School students’ day. Every school day begins and ends school-wide and/or classroom prayer.
Retreats
Beginning in middle school, students attend at least one retreat per year. From reflection to service to rallies, retreats provide opportunities to explore one’s faith and relationships with each other and God. Retreats range in size from the Junior Rally, a gathering of all high school juniors in the Diocese of LaCrosse, to the intimate conversations amongst small groups of classmates.
Within the middle school, retreats begin in sixth grade when students participate in a prayer service and small retreat during their time at the school forest in the fall of the year. Seventh graders wrap up their school year with a small retreat followed by an end of the year activity. For the 8th graders, the NET group leads an all day retreat at the school.
At the high school, the Freshmen Retreat focuses on relationships with self, friends, and God. It is a way of welcoming freshmen to the NCHS Christian community and to help them explore their faith within these relationships. The Sophomore Retreat focuses on family. On a practical level it helps sophomores learn effective family communication skills, but it also provides the opportunity for them to explore the role of faith and God within the family relationship. The Junior Rally provides an opportunity for juniors to join with their peers from all the Diocesan high schools to celebrate their faith and explore Catholic identity within the context of the larger Church. The Retreat experience concludes with a three day retreat in the spring of a student’s senior year. Senior Retreat meets the students as they really begin to prepare for one of the biggest transitions of their lives. It helps them think about who they have become, where they are going, and how their faith fits into all this.
