Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply?
Applications are available online at www.factstuitionaid.com or by request at the NCS Central Office (715-845-5735). The application deadline is March 1, 2008. There is a nominal application fee.

Applications for scholarships may be obtained from Newman Catholic Middle School and Newman Catholic High School. For elementary scholarships, please contact the parish you attend and support or your principal.

What is SCRIP and how do I earn tuition credits from the program?
SCRIP is a nationally recognized fundraising program which allows non-profit organizations like Newman Catholic Schools to benefit from the generoisty of major corporations and local merchants. SCRIP is different from other fundraisers because the participants do not buy or sell anything "extra." Through the SCRIP program, Newman Catholic SCRIP program buys certificates and debit cards at a discount and in turn sells them for the face value. The profit made from the sale of SCRIP is used in two ways. It is divided between a tuition credit for participants and fundraiser to benefit the NCS system. SCRIP credits are issued once a year based on usage. Please contact the SCRIP Office to enroll in the program - 715-842-8895.

What is the difference between a scholarship and tuition assistance?
Scholarships are established to provide tuition for current students. Most scholarships are awarded through a granting process and families are awarded the scholarships at the end of the school year for the next school year. Newman can provide an application process to choose students based on academic, achievement, financial need, leadership, service and/or involvement. Most of the scholarship programs are for Newman Catholic High School students. However, there are many other scholarships that are awarded to elementary and middle school families. Scholarships range from $100 to $500 per year. Some scholarship programs support students through several years of school.

Tuition assistance pays a portion of the tuition for families unable to afford the full cost of a Catholic school education. A pool of money is made available for Newman Catholic Schools families and is awarded based on financial need. A third party reviews the financial aid application and recommends the amount of the award based on family size, income and need. The average award per student for the 2006/2007 year was $440.

What is workstudy?
Incoming freshmen and current Newman Catholic High School students may apply for the summer workstudy program. Students may choose to participate in the two two-week sessions held during the summer to earn credit toward tuition. Participation is limited to those families who complete a financial aid application. Applications are made available in April.

What ways does Newman raise money for assisting students with tuition?
Newman raises money for tuition assistance through the annual auction, the annual fund/phonathon, and a grant from the diocese. We are similar to other Catholic schools in the United States, awarding 15% of our total tuition in tuition assistance and scholarship - approximatly $200,000 a year.
